What's law got to do with it?
up
We offer this page as a forum for discussion about law and the Internet, footnote and fancy free. Law connotes order, predictability, structure, adherence to precedent, and boundaries, characteristics which tend not to be associated with cyberspace. In a very short time, however, the Internet has come to involve serious money, and when the stakes get high, the players do tend to start bringing lawyers to the table.

Is the game going to be ruined when "the suits" show up? There is reason to hope it won't. In its first appearance before the Supreme Court, the Internet got respect as a: "unique and wholly new medium of worldwide human communication" (Reno v. ACLU, 117 S. Ct at 2334).

On any given issue, many courts and legislatures will be speaking before there is settled law concerning the Internet; nothing yet has been hard wired. If you are concerned that there has been too much or too little application of "terrestrial" law to a cyberspace issue, please post your comments here for discussion.
